The mixture of jazz and Arabic music constitutes a very good foundation for musical innovation – a fact that the Frankfurt Radio Bigband was already able to discover in 2013 during its project with the French-Lebanese trumpet player Ibrahim Maalouf. The Tunisian oud player Dhafer Youssef is yet another virtuoso who manages very well to blend the sounds of Arabia with modern beats and acoustic jazz.
Youssef currently does not work with a band on a regular basis – for every project he likes to get together with new musicians. An approach that perfectly fits the concept of the Frankfurt Radio Bigband. One can only wait and see what kind of program Dhafer Youssef and the Swedish arranger Magnus Lindgren will surprise their audience with this time!

If you can find such a soul and R&B singer in your own country, you shouldn't hesitate for long if you can ask her to join you on stage. No sooner said than done: the Frankfurt Radio Big Band invites you to a new series called “Pop Abo” with Joy Denalane. Raised in West Berlin as the daughter of a South African and a native from the city of Heidelberg, the musician is still one of Germany's most distinctive soul voices.
This is not the first time Denalane has played with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, but there will be a completely new program with freshly written arrangements for the occasion. The occasion is Joy's new album "Let Yourself Be Loved" which she released on the legendary US label Motown Records. The name of the label is program and so you can look forward to a soul evening in the style of the 1960s and 70s. Joining her on the keys will be the album's producer and Joy Denalane's long-time musical companion: Roberto Di Gioia.

It is the story of two youth gangs in 1950s New York who fight for supremacy in their neighborhood. The conflict, the poor conditions and the frustration about this lead to entanglements that end as a tragedy.
The fact that "West Side Story" became one of the most famous musicals in history is due to its literary model "Romeo and Juliet" and above all to the music of Leonard Bernstein. Bernstein is considered a border crosser between classical, modern and the jazz of his time.
With his version for large jazz orchestra, arrangeur Jörg Achim Keller has written Bernstein's music for the Swedish trombonist and singer Nils Landgren and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band.
