On the musical map, Cuba is one thing above all: the home of the great Buena Vista Social Club. To reduce a pianist like Roberto Fonseca to this would be fatal. But it is true: He earned his spurs as the successor of the legendary Rubén Gonzáles with more than 400 concerts worldwide as the pianist of the "Club". Since then, Fonseca has worked as an arranger, producer and musician for many stars of Cuban music, such as Omara Portuondo and Ibrahim Ferrer.
Meanwhile, as a jazz pianist, Fonseca has risen to become a brand of his own on the Cuban music scene. He embodies Cuba on a next musical level, searching for new sounds and connections to other musical styles. And who better than Fonseca, who learned the "Son Cubano" from the greats and now continues it in a cosmopolitan way, with technical precision and a sure sense of melody and rhythm?

The 2020/21 season ended with a concert with Lucy Woodward, which we had broadcast as a livestream and video on demand. But we certainly didn't want to leave it at that, so we now invited her back for another concert project. It's your chance to be there live when one of the most versatile singers comes to Frankfurt! No wonder because Lucy Woodward comes from a thoroughly musical home. Her mother herself is a versatile opera singer, her father a conductor and composer.
She was a background singer with Rod Stewart or Joe Cocker, and then stood in the spotlight as the front woman of the band Pink Martini at the Montreal Jazz Festival. That's exactly where we see her, and that's where we put her - in the middle of the hr-Sendesaal. Chief conductor Jim McNeely will write a funky groovy program for her for this encounter with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band.
