The Frankfurt Radio Bigband and the Landesmusikrat of Hesse have merged their two big band competitions. In the preliminaries, the young talents have already proven their abilities. Three finalists have been chosen. After being coached by musicians of Hesse’s youth big band, now the winner will be selected. The band who wins 1st prize may represent Hesse at the national "Jugend jazzt" competition and will thus be coached again by musicians of the Frankfurt Radio Bigband. However, also the other finalists can look forward to attractive prizes. After all, it is the aim of the competition to give young musicians the chance to exchange views, gain experiences and learn from professional jazz musicians. More than anything else though, they should have fun. And that will certainly be the case once they start playing this evening!

It all began with Sonny Rollins: When Melissa Aldana heard him play for the first time, she wanted nothing more than play the tenor saxophone. Thanks to her unique sound, the 34-year-old has meanwhile become a sought-after jazz musician herself. In 2013, she was the first woman to win the "Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition". Like McNeely, Aldana is firmly anchored in New York’s jazz scene. Both have thus been musical colleagues and friends for a long time. After the successful concerts of the past season, the saxophone player now returns to the Frankfurt Radio Bigband. Together they travel to Aschaffenburg and Rüsselsheim for two concerts.
