Friedrich Gulda and Duke Ellington, what an exciting encounter that would have been! Gulda, pianist legend from Austria, enfant terrible of classical music and composer himself, and Ellington, one of the greatest jazz musicians, especially in the field of orchestral jazz, together in Kronberg? At least in spirit, brought together by Beni Schmid and the Frankfurt Radio Big Band.

At the age of 11, Billy Childs discovered the music of the New York singer-songwriter Laura Nyro. The love for her music led to a brilliant tribute in 2015: "Map to the treasure - Reimagining Laura Nyro". With this album he set a monument to Nyro's work, which was also awarded a Grammy. Billy Child's versions of Nyro's music are central to this program.

"Synthpop for the people of tomorrow" is how a fellow musician describes the music of Lucia Cadotsch and Wanja Slavin. In their joint project LIUN, they create a unique sound that consists of bold synthesizer sounds, electronically tickling percussion and darkly opulent arrangements. With the Frankfurt Radio Big Band, LIUN can now draw even more from the full range of sound.

Terri Lyne Carrington is the founder of the Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice at Berklee College of Music. She works to make the patriarchal world of jazz more gender-equitable at all levels. Her book "New Standards - 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers" is one of her results. A selection will be heard at the German Jazz Festival Frankfurt, exclusively orchestrated by Jim McNeely.
